Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College Chandigarh organises an expert lecture to celebrate National Librarians' Day

 Chandigarh : The Readers Club of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Sector 32-C, Chandigarh celebrated National Librarians' Day today in memory of the 130th Birth Anniversary of Padamshri Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. As a part of the celebrations an expert lecture was organised with the topic ‘Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Education Institutions and Current Publishing Trends’. The keynote speaker for the event was Ms. Bhawna Vashishtha, LIS Professional, Central Library, University of Delhi. Dr Tarvinder Singh Handa, Library Information Officer, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar was a Special Invitee.

 

Dr Ajay Sharma, Principal of the college gave the welcome address emphasising on the role and contribution of libraries in the building of a responsive and holistically intellectual environment for students and faculty alike. He congratulated the organiser for holding an event celebrating the red letter day. He thanked Ms. Bhawna Vashishtha and Dr Tarvinder Singh Handa for their noteworthy contribution towards raising an awareness regarding plagiarism in higher education institutions, for highlighting latest trends in academic publishing and also for bringing to fore the significance of National Librarians' Day.

 

Dr Tarvinder Singh Handa, who has a work experience of more than 17 years including work at reputed Technical Institutions of Punjab including IIT, Ropar addressed the significance of National Librarians' Day. He highlighted the importance of contributions made by Librarians to the growth of education in the country since independence. He also shared various aspects from the life of Padamshri Dr. S.R.Ranganathan. Ms. Bhawna Vashishtha, who holds a work experience of over 26 years, spoke at length regarding various types of plagiarism, places it appears in, its punishment, ways to avoid it, practices and challenges in paraphrasing. She also brought to the audience’s notice various new technologies and softwares used in identifying and removing plagiarism. The lecture was followed by a lively interaction session. The event was attended by over 100 students and faculty. Dr Gurpreet Singh, Head Librarian, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College Chandigarh gave the vote of thanks. Dr. Agrim Verma from the Department of Commerce and Management moderated the session.
